The diaper cake and card were made for my niece last month for her baby shower. I have only made two other diaper cakes, but they were the regular round ones, with tiers and lots of toys. This time I wanted to try something different and ran into a few different types that I liked. The hard part was deciding which one to do. They have one that looks like a plane, one that looks like a motorcycle, one that looks like a train, even one that looks like a JEEP!!! I almost did the jeep, but then decided that my niece would probably like a quad more, and it was for her. I read directions from lots of different sites, got a somewhat good idea of how to do it, and the things I would need. I then made my list, and hit Walmart.
Supplies
Three Receiving Blankets
(I used one for the handles, then one each on the wheel wells, to hide the empty paper towel holders)
One pair of socks
(Used for handle bars)
Large pack of diapers (I used size 1)
(I used more than the directions I was looking at, because I wanted bigger wheels)
Two pacifiers
(used as head lights)
One Dishwashing Basket (It's in the baby section)
(For the seat)
Linkable teething toys
(to decorate the front of the quad)
Two different size ribbon spools.
(I used dark blue, and grey with the chevrons-reminded me of tire tread)
(For the wheels)
One sippy cup with handles
(For the light, also holds the handles together)
Two bibs
(I used one to cover the seat, and the other to cover the back of the seat)
One stuffed animal
(I also ended up buying the monkey shoes, because I couldn't resist their cuteness, and they match the monkey I got to be the rider)
One foam board - this makes it easier to transport the cake
One Large Plastic Table Cloth
The table cloth isn't in the photo. I used the table cloth to wrap around the cake after it was completed, then tied it together with some of the ribbon. This cake wasn't meant for a center piece, but as a gift. I had her open it as soon as I got to the shower, and not wait until the end, when gifts are normally given. At that time she did end up using it for a center piece because she loved how it looked. <3
The remainder of the supplies I ended up using I already had at home.
The license plates (you can only see the front one in the photos, but there is also one on the back. Front has the baby's first name, back has his middle name.) I used Darice Rectangle Wood Pieces that I purchased previously from Amazon. I typed his name into my Silhouette program, and cut it out using my Cameo. I cut if from blue vinyl that I had purchased from expressions vinyl. I also found the star design for the wheels on Google, and cut it out (four of them to be exact, one per wheel)
Two empty paper towel rolls (used to connect each wheel)
Blue yarn (I used for the tires)
Rubber bands (to secure the tires together)
Double sided tape
I've attached a couple links that were helpful to me in making this, they go into way more detail. You may need to copy and paste the links into your browser.
My side notes on this project;
You can purchase pre-made diaper cakes, they are all over the internet, but they are pricy. Super duper cute but pricy. This project took a bit longer to do that I thought it would, so make sure you have more time than you think you will need.
Gather up all your patience, you're gonna need it.
Have fun!!!
